MUMBAI: The Shiv Sena has denounced Samajwadi MP and actor Jaya Bachchan for her statement that the people of Maharashtra should not object to her speaking in Hindi.
On Saturday, during the launch of the music of her upcoming film Drona, Jaya had said, "I am from Uttar Pradesh and will speak in Hindi and the people of Maharashtra should not take any objection."
Sources at the event said, "There was no reason for Jaya to use an entertainment platform to take potshots at politicians. It did not sound like a spur-of-the-moment statement, but it was well planned."
Buoyed by Jaya's statement, her Drona co-star Priyanka Chopra, who is also from UP, said, "Since Jayaji has told us to speak in Hindi, I too will speak in the same language."
A source present at the event said, "While Goldie Behl, the director of the film, spoke in English, Jaya chose to speak in Hindi. She said the film is in Hindi and she will talk about the film in Hindi."
Criticising Jaya's statement, Sena MP Sanjay Raut said the actress has hurt the sentiments of the people of Maharashtra. "She owes her wealth and fame to the film industry based in Mumbai. And yet she spoke disparagingly about the people of Maharashtra."
Raut said that while the Shiv Sena has always upheld Hindi's status as the national language, the party will not allow anyone to "run down the local culture and language". "There was no need for Jaya to make that remark," he said. "I am sure her husband and superstar Amitabh Bachchan does not share her views." Amitabh is known to be close to Sena chief Bal Thackeray.
Jaya, earlier this year, had crossed swords with MNS chief Raj Thackeray who criticised her decision to build a school in Uttar Pradesh. Jaya had shot back saying she was willing to set up a school in Mumbai provided Raj was willing to donate land for it.
MNS spokesperson Shishir Shinde said Jaya's remark was aimed at gaining cheap publicity. "The recent 'Unforgettable ' tour of the Bachchans proved to be a flop show and Jaya is trying to bring the limelight back on the family through this remark. MNS is treating her remarks with the contempt they deserve."
Meanwhile, the MNS appears to have established a lead over the Sena by forcing most of the shops to replace their English signboards with those in Marathi. "Though the Sena is in power in the BMC, it did little to implement the rule. The MNS did it without being in power," a member said.
