सोमचाई वोंगसावात का नया प्रधानमंत्री चुना जाना थाइलैंड के राजनीतिक संकट में और इजाफा कर सकता है। इस फैसले का 3 हफ्ते से प्रधानमंत्री कार्यालय को घेरे हुए प्रदर्शनकारियों ने विरोध किया है। अभी मतदान के फैसले पर देश के महाराजा की औपचारिक मंजूरी की दरकार है।

BANGKOK, THAILAND: Thailand's opposition group, People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), Wednesday (17 Sept) rejected the House vote for Somchai Wongsawat as prime minister and vowed to continue its street protests.
"Our goals remain the same--opposing any charter rewrite and ousting the People Power Party from the coalition government," PAD leader Chamlong Srimuang said.
Chamlong said he expected the Somchai government to inflict damage on the country and hamper the introduction of "new politics" as advanced by the PAD.
PAD, which has been occupying the prime minister's office in Bangkok since late last month, has been calling for a parliament where 70% of the MPs would be appointed.
All PAD leaders were in unanimous agreement that the House vote for Somchai would not resolve the political crisis, he said.
He said PAD leaders were not concerned about their arrests on the charge of treason, and argued that this would not have an impact on the protests and that the leaders would neither flee nor surrender.
"I heard that about 20 trucks are transporting plainclothes policemen dressed in yellow shirts to try to infiltrate the protesters and arrest PAD leaders," he said.
Another PAD leader Somsak Kosaisuk said Somchai was just a political bandit acting as nominee of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Somsak claimed that Somchai was involved in many irregularities linked to the Thaksin government.
