English Translation:

Samajawadi Party leader Amar Singh is playing a stellar role in yet another sibling rivalry between actor Sanjay Dutt and his politician sister Priya. Singh weaned away Sanjay Dutt to his party despite his family’s long-standing links with the Congress. Mother Nargis Dutt and father Sunil Dutt were Congress MPs while sister Priya represents the party from Bandra.

According to observers here, the Congress party’s decision to let Priya don Sunil Dutt’s mantle hadn’t gone down with Sanjay Dutt though he remains deeply embroiled in the 1993 blasts case. Amar Singh stepped in to offer Dutt an SP ticket from UP much to the discomfiture of the Dutt family. Only last week, Singh said Sanjay Dutt’s wife Maanyata could be given the SP ticket if the actor was disbarred from contesting due to his being found guilty under the Arms Act.

Priya Dutt vented her anger at her brother when she told a newspaper that the actor was influenced by his wife Maanyata, a starlet with a controversial past. The newspaper also quoted Priya as questioning the legality of Maanyata’s marriage with the actor.

Predictably, Amar Singh who has appointed himself as Sanjay Dutt’s elder brother hit out at Priya Dutt for her interview. Strongly refuting that Dutt’s late father Sunil Dutt would not have been happy at Sanjay joining the SP, Singh said the actor had even campaigned for the party while the elder Dutt was alive. “Sanjay Dutt had campaigned for Jaya Prada from Rampur in Uttar Pradesh even while Sunil Dutt was around,” Singh told reporters in Delhi.

The counterattack from the Sanjay camp seems to have clearly unnerved Priya. “I was shocked to learn that Sanjay Dutt was contesting as a candidate of the Samajwadi Party,” Dutt told reporters in Mumbai today.

Priya, however, said her comments were misinterpreted. “Everyone has a right to take his or her decision. I don’t want to pass judgement on anyone’s life,” she said when asked about her reaction to Sanjay Dutt’s decision to join the SP and his marriage to Manyata.

Priya further added that her parents’ names should not be dragged into any controversy. “I have never brought my family into public life,” Dutt said. “There is no family feud,” she insisted.

The Dutts live together in the suburban building constructed on the site of Sunil Dutt’s old bungalow. Sanjay Dutt himself has refused to comment on the matter.
