दिल्ली हाईकोर्ट ने महात्मा गांधी से जुड़ी चीजों की न्यूयार्क में नीलामी पर मंगलवार को अंतरिम रोक लगा दी। हाईकोर्ट ने यह निर्देश अहमदाबाद के नवजीवन ट्रस्ट द्वारा दायर एक याचिका की सुनवाई के दौरान दिया। इसके साथ ही, जस्टिस अनिल कुमार ने इन वस्तुओं की नीलामी करने वाली न्यूयार्क की ‘एंटीकोरम ऑक्शनीयर्स’ को नोटिस भेजकर उसे छह मार्च तक जवाब देने का निर्देश दिया है।
ट्रस्ट की ओर से जिरह करते हुए अतिरिक्त महाधिवक्ता मोहन पाराशरन ने कहा महात्मा गांधी से जुड़ी चीजें भारत की हैं, जिन्हें गैर कानूनी तरीके विदेश ले जाया गया है। इसलिए इन वस्तुओं को बेचा नहीं जा सकता है। इन वस्तुओं की नीलामी पांच मार्च को प्रस्तावित है।
पाराशरन ने कोर्ट को बताया कि 1996 में एक ब्रिटिश फर्म द्वारा महात्मा गांधी की हस्तलिखित वस्तुओं की नीलामी पर मद्रास हाईकोर्ट ने स्थगन आदेश दिया था। इस बीच, संस्कृति मंत्रालय के प्रवक्ता ने बताया कि सरकार इन वस्तुओं का अधिग्रहण करने का हर संभव प्रयास कर रही है।
गौरतलब है कि छह वर्ष पहले उद्योगपति विजय माल्या ने लंदन में एक नीलामी के दौरान टीपू सुल्तान की तलवार खरीदी थी। 4 मई 1799 को श्रीरंगपट्टनम की लड़ाई में सुल्तान के पतन के बाद ब्रिटिश सेना इस तलवार को लेती गई थी।

A private collector who planned to sell Mahatma Gandhi's watch, bowl sandals and trademark round glasses at an auction in New York said he is willing to negotiate with the Indian government.
James Otis, a human rights campaigner from the US, had planned to have the items auctioned off in New York this week.
But following an outcry from some of Gandhi's relatives, the Indian government said it would do "whatever could be done" to try and return them to the country.
Meanwhile, the auctioneers in New York, Antiquorom, said the sale will proceed on Thursday.
Gandhi had shunned material possessions and ironically because he had so little possessions, his items are likely to fetch a lot.
Julien Schaerer, Antiquorom’s auctioneer, said: "The objects are definitely priceless (but)... there is going to be a final monetary value on them. According to the interest we had worldwide on the items, I would not be surprised at all if the items are brought anywhere in the US$200,000 to US$300,000 range."
The planned auction was called a grave insult by Gandhi's great grandson, but the auction house said the sale would go ahead as it is legal and from a private collector.
The auction house said ideally, a wealthy individual could purchase the items and make them available to the public.
Schaerer said: "I would really like a private wealthy individual to actually purchase them and donate them back to his country... and (they could) really be (placed) in a museum for the Indian people to see on a regular basis."
Even in these difficult economic times, such rare collection is sure to attract many bids, especially in light of the current calls to stop this auction from happening at all.
